What it catches
What cleaning a mailing list finds.
Undeliverable addresses
Addresses that do not exist, are missing an apartment number, or that USPS has marked vacant. Each one is flagged with the reason rather than silently dropped.
People who have moved
Records are checked against the USPS change-of-address database. Where someone has filed a move, the new address is applied and the record is flagged as updated.
Duplicate records
The same household or person entered twice under different spellings, with or without a middle initial, or with the street written a different way.
Inconsistent formatting
Casing, abbreviations and component order normalized to USPS specifications, so the list reads the same way throughout.
The returned file
What you get back.
One file, same row order as the one you sent, with new columns added beside your own.
Corrected address
Standardized street, city, state and ZIP in USPS format.
ZIP+4 and delivery point
The four-digit extension and delivery point code that automation rates require.
County
County name and five-digit FIPS code for every address that validates.
Move flags
Which records were updated by NCOA, and when the move was filed.
Deliverability flags
Why a record failed, so you can judge it rather than guess.
Your original columns
The address, city and ZIP exactly as you sent them, kept alongside the corrected versions.

FAQ
Common questions
What does cleaning a mailing list actually do?
Four things: it corrects and standardizes each address to USPS specifications, appends the ZIP+4 so the mail qualifies for automation rates, updates addresses for people who have filed a change of address, and flags records that are undeliverable or duplicated.
How much does it cost to clean a mailing list?
Through the self-service portal it is $50 plus $5 per 1,000 records, so a 50,000-record list is $300. Larger lists drop to $1 per 1,000 and then $0.40 per 1,000. You see the exact price before you pay.
How long does it take?
Most files finish in under 10 minutes. Lists up to 2 million records complete within an hour. Anything larger is handled as a full-service job.
Will I lose any records?
No. Nothing is deleted. Undeliverable and duplicate records come back flagged with the reason so you decide what to drop, and your original address, city and ZIP are preserved in separate columns next to the corrected ones.
Do you update addresses for people who have moved?
Yes, through NCOALink against the USPS change-of-address database. Moves are applied and each updated record is flagged so you can see which ones changed.
What file formats can I send?
CSV, Excel (.xlsx / .xls), pipe-delimited and tab-delimited. We detect the format and encoding automatically. The minimum job is 10 records.
Is my list kept private?
Uploads are encrypted in transit, your file is stored only for as long as processing takes, and it is purged within 24 hours of download. We do not add your records to any list or resell them.
